The Federation of Australian Historical Societies (Inc.) (FAHS) annually calls for nominations for its Fellowship Award. Up to three FAHS Fellowships are awarded to individuals. Honourees receive an appropriate certificate and are entitled to use the post-nominal letters FFAHS.
Fellowships are awarded as recognition of an outstanding and sustained contribution to the community history and heritage movement at the national level, and/or in more than one State or Territory, and/or a contribution at State/Territory level which has had national implications.
Any individual is eligible for this award who has a relationship with of one of the constituent societies of the Federation, namely the Canberra and District Historical Society, Historical Society of the Northern Territory, History Trust of South Australia, Royal Australian Historical Society, Royal Historical Society of Queensland, Royal Historical Society of Victoria, Royal Western Australian Historical Society and Tasmanian Historical Research Association.
Individuals having an association with other community history/heritage organisations may be eligible, but nominations must be submitted via one of the above FAHS constituents.
Eligibility must be demonstrated through one or more of the following:
- outstanding and sustained contribution on national historical/heritage bodies and/or at
- State/Territory level which has had national implications;
- outstanding and sustained contribution to advocacy for the protection and conservation of movable and built heritage at national level, and/or with implications for more than one State or Territory;
- outstanding and sustained contribution to Australian historiography;
- outstanding and sustained record of publication of works that promote engagement with community history and/or heritage or heritage protection with implications at national level and/or in more than one State or Territory;
- outstanding and sustained contribution to advocacy for and/or the teaching of history/heritage at primary, secondary and/or tertiary levels or similar, including teacher training and ongoing professional learning, at national level and/or in more than one State or Territory;
- outstanding and sustained contribution to the collection, preservation, care and management of movable and/or built heritage, at national level and/or in more than one State or Territory;
- outstanding and sustained contribution to technology that has supported the preservation, promotion or sharing of built or movable heritage and which has been taken up at national level and/or in more than one State or Territory;
- other forms of outstanding and sustained contribution having a bearing on achieving the aims of the FAHS, its constituent societies and/or the community history and heritage movement nationally.
Currently serving members of the FAHS Council are not eligible for nomination.
